Firefighters helped divert surges of water away from people’s homes in Co Clare on Monday night after a water mains pipe burst in the area.

Water began gushing out of the burst mains on the R463 road near Shannon Banks in Corbally before 11pm.

Dozens of houses in the Shannon Banks housing estate were destroyed in 2009 when the River Shannon flowed through them after bursting its banks following severe rainstorms.

Twelve firefighters attached to Limerick City Fire Service responded and used sandbags and floating pumps to help protect homes under threat from the burst of floodwater.

It’s the second large water mains to burst in Limerick recently. Early on July 15th residents in Bengal Terrace awoke to dirty water flowing through their homes after a large water mains pipe burst.

Ten homes were badly damaged and residents later complained the water was contaminated with raw sewage, which Irish Water said it had not found any evidence of.

A spokesman for the utility company said it was investigating the cause of the mains break.
