Two British-registered factory trawlers have been escorted into Cork harbour by the Naval Service patrol ship LE Samuel Beckett following their detention off the south-west coast on Wednesday.

The 55m Wiron 5 and Wiron 6, both equipped to fish for mackerel, were boarded in a joint Naval Service and Sea Fisheries Protection Authority inspection some 30 miles west of the Blasket islands off the Kerry coast.

They have been detained for suspected “high grading” or selective harvesting of fish in Irish waters.
