A 15-year-old boy who was seriously injured after getting into difficulty while swimming in Lough Sheelin earlier in the week has died.

On Tuesday afternoon, emergency services attended a callout to the lake, which sits on the border of Co Cavan, Co Meath, and Co Westmeath.

The teenage boy was recovered from the water and rushed to Temple Street Children’s Hospital, where his condition was described as serious at the time.

On Thursday evening the teenager was pronounced dead in the hospital, a Garda spokesman confirmed.
