A shop in Castlebar, Co Mayo, sold last Friday’s winning EuroMillions Jackpot ticket worth €29 million, it has emerged.

The Garryduff XL store on Pound Road sold the ticket and so far the winner has decided to remain anonymous. The winning ticket was a Quick Pick, according to the National Lottery.

The winner made contact on Monday, but it is not yet known when the person will collect the winnings. They have 90 days to do so.

Speaking on Tuesday, the owner of the shop, Umesh Kumar, said he could not believe it when he was contacted to say his store had sold the ticket.

“We had no idea at all,” he said. “We are all thrilled here at the news. It is a great boost for the area and we are delighted for the winner whoever it is. It will take a while for this to sink in.”

National Lottery chief executive Dermot Griffin said it was important the winner be given the time and space to make arrangements and to “let the news sink in”.

“This is an incredible amount of money to win, and we have advised the winner to get independent financial and legal advice,” he said.

This is the second EuroMillions Jackpot won in Castlebar. In April 2014, a ticket worth €15 million was sold in a Costcutter store.

The latest win brings the total Irish EuroMillions winnings to over €1 billion.
