Gardaí in Cork have begun an investigation after a 20-year-old man was injured in a shooting incident in the city last night.

The man was with a group of people drinking on a green area at the bottom of the Fair Field in Fairhill on the city’s northside when a row broke out around at 11.30pm.

It’s believed one of the parties to the row returned with a firearm and fired a shot that struck the injured man, who is from the area but who had not been involved in the row.

The man was rushed by ambulance to Cork University Hospital where he underwent emergeny surgery but his injuries are not life-threatening.

Gardaí were called and cordoned off the scene, which is at the back of Bride Valley View, and garda technical experts are beginning a forensic examination this morning.

Gardaí are liaising with doctors at CUH to see when the man will be well enough to talk to detectives investigating the shooting

Gardaí have appealed to anyone who may have been in the area and witnessed anything to contact them at Gurranebraher Garda Station on 021-494 6200.
