Gardaí in Cork have begun an investigation after a Frenchman in his 20s was killed in a hit and run incident in the city centre last night.

The pedestrian was struck by a white Ford Transit van which didn’t stop as he was walking on George’s Quay in the south inner city at about 9.30pm.

The injured man was rushed by ambulance to Cork University Hospital but was pronounced dead a short time later.

Gardaí cordoned off the scene of the incident and Garda forensic crash investigators began examining the scene for clues that would help them identify the van.
