Cyclist and motorist die after collisions in Dublin and Roscommon

Woman in her 90s, who had been reported missing, found in car in deep ditch near Castleplunket

A cyclist and a motorist have died following incidents in Dublin and Co Roscommon.

A male cyclist was killed following a collision involving a road sweeping truck on White Church Road in Rathfarnham at about 1.30pm.

The man, age currently unknown, was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision, which has been sealed off to allow a forensic examination to be carried out. Gardaí said the driver of the truck was unharmed.

Fianna Fáil councillor Emma Murphy, who represents the Rathfarnham area, said the road in question was always busy and regularly used by cyclists. “It’s a narrow road. It’s devastating for the community, for the deceased man and his family.”

Separately, a woman in her 90s was killed in a single vehicle crash near Castleplunket.

Gardaí found a car crashed in a deep ditch on the Castleplunket to Ballintubber road at about 12.45pm. The woman’s body was found in the car.

She had been reported missing on Thursday when she failed to return home from an appointment. Her body has been taken to University College Hospital Galway where a postmortem will take place.

Diversions are in place around the scene of the crash, some 3km from Castleplunket, while Garda Forensic Collision Investigators investigate.
