A status yellow warning has been issued for Cork and Kerry over the bank holiday weekend.

A spell of heavy rain on Saturday afternoon and evening may lead to localised flooding in the two counties.

The warning is valid from 12pm to midnight on Saturday.

Outbreaks of rain will move across the western half of the country but staying generally dry further east. However, the rain will gradually extend nationwide during the afternoon and evening. There is a risk of localised flooding in southern coastal counties as rain turns heavy and persistent.

It is due to become rather windy too, with fresh and gusty southerly winds, reaching strong to near gale on exposed coasts. Highest temperatures will reach 12 to 15 degrees.

Blustery outbreaks of rain will clear eastwards during Saturday night, followed by a mixture of clear spells and scattered heavy showers. It will be mild, with temperatures not falling below 9 to 12 degrees with gusty southerly winds.

Sunny spells are due on Sunday with scattered heavy showers, especially in Atlantic counties, where they will develop into longer spells of rain with moderate to fresh southwest winds. Temperatures will reach highs of 13 to 16 degrees, mildest and brightest in the east.

On Sunday night, the last of the blustery and wet conditions will clear with scattered showers following for the rest of the night, mainly confined to the west and northwest later.

A chilly night is also expected across the country as temperatures drop to 4 to 8 degrees, in moderating southwest winds.

Bank holiday Monday is due to be a fresher day than of late with sunny spells and scattered showers, mainly across the western half of the country. Top temperatures will range 10 to 13 degrees in mostly moderate southwesterly breezes.

Mostly dry and clear early on Monday evening, apart from some Atlantic coastal showers. Later in the night, patchy outbreaks of rain and drizzle will appear, especially across the west and northwest. Lowest temperatures of around 6 to 9 degrees, coolest early on.
