The representative body for hundreds of the country’s grocers has called on the director of consumer affairs to investigate Tesco prices.

RGDATA says Tesco are misleading customers over short-term promotional prices in an attempt to win customers.

The group claims Tesco increased prices on leading brands despite previous price cuts made by them as part of an ongoing price-offensive.

In some cases the prices have risen by as much as 50 per cent since January.

Tesco has denied the allegation, insisting that a 20 per cent reduction on certain products was maintained.
