Gardai consider return to bikes

A proposal to put gardai back on bicycles is being put together for consideration by senior gardai

A proposal to put gardai back on bicycles is being put together for consideration by senior gardai. The idea is understood to be the idea of an officer in the Dublin area, who is suggesting a pilot project.

If the scheme worked, it is proposed that it be extended to other parts of Dublin. Areas of Britain and the US have already reintroduced bicycles for police officers.

The Dublin bicycling proposal was prompted by several considerations, including the growing traffic problem in the capital. It is also considered that it would be well received in the community and assist the development of community policing.

The Garda authorities recently introduced a number of new units, including a mounted unit, and it is hoped the bicycle proposal will receive a positive response.

A number of gardai consulted yesterday about the proposed initiative said they would be willing to "give it a go".

One member who recently passed out from Templemore said: "It would be a great way to stay fit, especially in the summer, when you're sweltering in the patrol car. But I don't know if I'd be as keen on a freezing winter's day."
