Parts of country saw wettest March in last eight years

Coldest temperatures were recorded in Dublin

Parts of the country saw their wettest March in the last five to eight years with above average rainfall in in parts of the West, Southwest, South and Dublin according to Met Éireann.

The month’s lowest temperatures were in Dublin with a reading of -3.3 degrees recorded at Dublin airport and Casement Aerodrome on March 12th.

Rainfall levels significantly above average were recorded at Casement Aerodrome, Dublin, Johnstown Castle, Co Wexford, Claremorris, Co Mayo, Shannon Airport, Co Clare, and Cork airport.

While Casement Aerodrome had one of its wettest March months in several years with rainfall at 115 per cent of the long-term average, nearby Dublin airport recorded the lowest rainfall in the State for the month at 53.8mm. March 20th was the wettest day of the month at most weather stations.

The month’s highest maximum temperature was recorded at Johnstown Castle on the 15th at 16 degrees but the highest mean temperature for the month was recorded at the Phoenix Park Dublin at 6 degrees.

Overall the first half of the month was mainly unsettled at the start, with bands of rain and showers before turning drier around mid-month.

The second half of the month brought further unsettled weather with drizzle, rain and heavy showers, some wintry, with hail and thunder.

Good bright spells between unsettled periods, but with some cloudy intervals with patches of mist and fog in places.
