Chatting

The court heard the victim was walking along the road when she met Byrne, whom she knew. Garda Cahill said the women were chatting when suddenly Byrne started assaulting her.

Byrne initially gave gardaí a false name and denied hurting the woman before she admitted to the assault. Luigi Rea BL, defending, said his client had addiction issues at the time of the offence.

Giving Byrne a suspended 18-month sentence, Judge Karen O’Connor said the attack was a “violent and unprovoked assault”.
