A security operation in Dublin’s south inner city involving the Army’s bomb disposal unit has come to an end.

It followed the discovery of a suspect explosive device on waste ground at Shaw Street, between Pearse Street and Townsend Street.

The alarm was raised at around 2.30pm. Uniformed and armed gardaí and armed members of the Defence Forces attended the scene.

Townsend Street and Shaw Street and sections of minor roads leading to it were sealed off but traffic restrictions have now been lifted.

The device was examined by the Army bomb disposal team, members of which arrived on the scene just before 3pm.

The device was found within about 20 metres of the rail line leading in and out of Tara Street train station.

Dart and other rail services were suspended between Connolly station and Pearse Street station but have now resumed with some delays expected.

“Customers should expect delays of up to 20mins but these will ease going forward,” Irish Rail said.

Gardaí in Pearse Street are leading the investigation into the device.
