The family of an elderly woman, who died four days after undergoing an operation at a Dublin hospital, have settled High Court proceedings which alleged negligence against the Health Service Executive.
Kathleen White (79) died on July 11th, 2010, after having undergone an operation at James Connolly Memorial Hospital in Blanchardstown, Dublin, to treat a hernia.
It was claimed the mother of four, and grandmother, died after her bowel was allegedly perforated while undergoing an operation to treat the hernia.
It was claimed the internal injury had not been detected until three days after the operation.Through her husband Patrick White, St Colmcille’s Park, Swords, Co Dublin, the family sued the HSE, claiming her death had been caused by the HSE’s negligence and breach of duty. The family also said they suffered emotional and mental distress.
Confidential basis
The claims were denied by the HSE and the matter was due to have been heard by the High Court but was settled on a confidential basis without admission of liability by the HSE.
Callan Tansey, the White family solicitor, said the family was happy the legal action had concluded and had asked that their privacy be respected.
