A teenager was killed when he tried to cross the busy N11 during rush-hour yesterday evening.

The 15-year-old boy was hit by a car on the northbound carriageway of the M11 at the Old Connaught Junction near Bray, Co Wicklow, at 6.40pm.

He had been crossing the road with two friends when the collision happened.

The victim, who was from the Rowengrove estate in the Fassaroe area of Bray, died at the scene.

He was brought to Loughlinstown hospital and a postmortem is expected to be carried out later today.

The incident caused 4km tailbacks on the N11/M11 southbound, with motorists slowing down as they passed the scene of the incident.

There were also delays northbound when a stretch of the motorway between Fassaroe and the Wilford Road junction was closed for most of yesterday evening with traffic being diverted via Bray.

The victim, who has not been named, is the ninth pedestrian to die on the roads this month.

With just one day left in the month, the number of people who have been killed to date on the State's roads at 24 is 15 fewer than at the same time last year.

Earlier yesterday Minister for Transport Martin Cullen said he was concerned at the level of pedestrians being killed during this month even while there had been a dramatic fall-off in the overall number of road deaths.

He said: "Clearly random breath-testing, its enforcement, and the increasing numbers within the traffic corps is all having a positive effect, but one of the figures that is startling for January is that nearly half of the people who have been killed are pedestrians. We have to look at that."
