House sale
Meanwhile at Sheppard’s, the auction house is readying the sale of contents of Moyaliffe House, Co Tipperary, as well as consignments from other important clients, as part of its Paradigms and The Unexpected sale.
The sale, which will take place on March 5th and 7th, with a preview preceding that, on March 2nd to 4th, is said to feature “an exceptional array of fine library furniture, lighting, Irish and European art, early tapestries, sculpture and objets d’art, Irish and continental art, Irish silver, rare Killarney furniture and collectibles”.
Among the many items for auction is a late 17th-century Aubusson tapestry, which depicts exotic birds in a wooded landscape, with a castle in the distance. It is enclosed by an elaborate armorial decorated border and has an estimate of €3,000-€5,000.
For those of a musical persuasion, there is a Bechstein baby grand piano (Lot 75, €3,000-€5,000).
Lot 150 is an important pair of Regency Cork side tables, each with a rectangular gadrooned top with rounded corners to the fore, below a three-quarter panelled gallery rail, raised on spiral turned legs to the fore terminating on hairy paw feet. The side tables were purchased at the dispersal sale of Kilkenny Castle, seat of the dukes of Ormonde, and have an estimate of €4,000-€6,000.
A particularly beautiful item is Lot 125, a 19th-century Ormolu jewellery table cabinet. It has a lift-up lid, which opens to a silk-lined interior, above two tortoiseshell and painted panelled doors enclosing fold-out gilded reticulated trays, over two painted panelled doors enclosing silk-lined drawers, raised on scroll feet. It has an estimate of €5,000-€8,000.
