Volvo’s mid-size SUV is one of the most spec-sensitive cars we’ve ever come across. Pick a luxurious Inscription model and you have one of the nicest cars in its class. It’s smooth and comfortable, and really very relaxing to drive. Good looking, too, and with a really gorgeous interior.
The new B5 mild-hybrid diesel engine is a cracker, so all should be well. Pick a sporty-looking R-Design version, though, and it all goes to pot a little. The firmer ride just doesn’t suit the car, the interior doesn’t seem as sybaritic and comfy, and the more aggressive steering setting makes the XC60 feel too ‘pointy’ and darty in corners.
So, the lesson here is simply not to be seduced by the dark side of sporty styling, especially when the car you’re buying is supposed to be a comfy family conveyance. T8 plugin hybrid a good diesel alternative, although it gets thirsty if you forget to charge it up.
