Dalkey can be a little like Brigadoon, the mythical town that people never want to leave.
The owners of this four bedroom home certainly feel that way. 24 Corrig Road, for sale with Lisney for €850,000, started life as a 1930s local authority house (a period when local authorities were building amazing houses). Then, 20 years ago, the current owners bought it, and loved it so much that, as their family grew, they grew the house too.
First the extension: they added a large, light and airy, oak-floored sitting room, with an open fireplace, plus a double bedroom with en suite above.

Then, a few years later, making the most of the long back garden, they put on a sun room, and a deck, with steps down to the lawn. The owner says this makes the house one surprise after another as the house opens up from its sweet, neat façade, to lots of lovely living space: 186sq m (2,000sq ft) in total.
The front has parking for two cars, a major plus in Dalkey. A porch, also added by the owners, opens into what appears to be still a relatively modest cottage. Instead you get a charming kitchen, with polished travertine tiles and units by Domino Design; alongside a breakfast room/den which has its own open fireplace.
Original features
Then the surprises begin down some steps to the expansive living room, which opens up to the sun room – large enough for entertaining as well as general lounging. A separate side entrance leads to a utility room, which is brilliant for those days when children surge in with muddy boots.
The finishes and materials are high quality and carefully considered throughout, but the owners were also keen to keep original features, including the sash windows, which are at the front of the house.
Upstairs are four bedrooms, one of them en suite, and a bathroom. The owners, who are moving to take on another project, and get even more space for their family, say they want to stay in the area. “It’s safe; it’s lovely and quiet; the neighbours are brilliant; there are schools, shops . . . everything is in walking distance. It’s everything you could want.”
