Style, space and grandeur in rambling Blackrock lodge for €2.7m

Once owned by the British embassy, this is a great opportunity to buy a very distinctive house

Formerly owned by the British embassy, Tudor Lodge is an intriguing mix of formal rooms, where you can easily imagine the Ferrero Rocher circulating in style, and more cosy family spaces, in which to kick your shoes off and relax in a slightly more haphazard fashion.

It’s also a house that manages this combination with ease, thanks in part to its size – 482sq m (5,200sq ft) on just under half an acre of gardens – and to a layout that gives a lovely rambling feel to it all.

Downstairs there are a games room, morning room, drawingroom, diningroom and kitchen, as well as pantries, utility rooms and lots of other smaller spaces. There’s even a clever little room that has been converted into a bar: a very nice surprise to discover behind that particular door.

Big rooms

The morning room and drawingroom have bay windows and open on to the decking that wraps around this side of the house. They’re big rooms, easily accommodating large sofas, a grand piano and a dining table for the extended family.

The kitchen is a little darker, though there were plans at one point to open this up to one of the inner courtyards that leads off it. It’s hard to imagine wanting more space at Tudor Lodge, but it’s definitely an option to get more light into the kitchen.

When it comes to sunlight, however, the en suite off the master bedroom has to be the hands-down winner. Possibly the sunniest, brightest en suite I’ve ever seen, with a full wall of windows, it would definitely make bathtime a real event.

The other bedrooms are all of a good size. Up in the eaves, they have charming sloping ceilings, and there is one additional en suite, as well as the family bathroom. Each has its own character, and the owners have had lots of fun with wallpaper, with the pattern in the master bedroom being particularly fairytale.

On Stradbrook Road, it’s close to schools, shops and sporting facilities and has good access to the city centre. Blackrock is also nearby. There is parking for a small fleet of cars at the front and a garage, but as public transport is so convenient, you may never need to take them out.

Built in the 1930s, Tudor Lodge is for sale through estate agent Colliers with a guide price of €2.7 million.
