The first trailer for The Office spin-off series The Paper starring Irish actor Domhnall Gleeson has been released.

The new series is presented as the latest project from the same documentary crew who shot The Office. This time the subject is a struggling midwestern newspaper called the Toledo Truth Teller.

Gleeson plays Ned Sampson, the positive if slightly delusional, new editor-in-chief of the Toledo Truth Teller who is determined to turn the paper’s fortunes around with only a rag-tag crew of volunteer journalists on hand.

Earlier this year Gleeson told Collider, “People are going to have to take the show on its own merits, because it’s become something different. It’s a whole new city.

“It’s not like a remake – it’s like a documentary crew went to a different city and they’re following different people. It’s not a paper company; it’s a newspaper. It’s a very, very different set-up.”

The show has a fairly star-studded cast with Sabrina Impacciatore, who recently starred in The White Lotus, and Chelsea Frei, who was a mainstay of the sitcom The Moodys, also featuring prominently.

Guest cameos were a big part of the original series and Molly Ephraim, Mo Welch and Tracy Letts have been announced as guest stars.

The Paper is from the makers of the UK and US Office series with Stephen Merchant and Ricky Gervais serving as executive producers. Greg Daniels, who in 2005 adapted the UK Office series for American audiences, has co-written, created and produced the show with Michael Koman, best known for the American sitcom Nathan For You.

Oscar Nuñez is the only actor to reprise their role from the US Office TV series as he will once again play accountant Oscar Martinez.

The Paper will be available to audiences in the UK and Ireland on Sky and through the streaming service NOW on September 5th, the day after its US premier. After that, two episodes will be released every Thursday night until September 25th.
