Willie McKeown’s untimely death in Edinburgh last October stunned the Irish art world. Born in Tyrone in 1962, McKeown initially studied art history and textiles at the Central School of Art and Design in London, before going on to complete an MA in fine art at the University of Ulster in 1994. From then on he exhibited consistently, including a succession of solo shows at the Kerlin Gallery and a major survey show at Imma in 2008.

McKeown took the idiom of minimalist abstraction to create spare, light-drenched paintings that sought to encapsulate the pure intensity of our experience of natural beauty. Delicate watercolour descriptions of wildflowers, usually on a much smaller scale, tactfully pointed us in this direction, and in his room installations he set out to make meditative, reflective spaces for habitation.

This show is a tribute to the artist. A major exhibition will follow in May at Inverleith House in Edinburgh.
