Pictet Cie is a private European bank with a reputation for “sustainable investment expertise”. It sponsors the annual Prix

Pictet for photography and sustainability – or photography addressing a given environmental theme. Last year’s theme was the thorny issue of Growth, and you can see work by the dozen-strong shortlist from a field of 450 nominated photographers.

The standard is very high, with such renowned figures as Edward Burtynsky, Taryn Simon and Thomas Struth featuring, and the work is never less than fascinating, visually and conceptually.

Stéphane Couturier's studies of a Toyota assembly plant are stunning. The winner was Mitch Epstein for his fantastic project American Power(pictured), an exploration of the impact of the US's appetite for energy on its home environment.

Chris Jordan won the commission award and his monograph, Ushirikiano, has been published alongside a handsome volume documenting the work submitted for the prize, Growth, both by teNeues (the latter picked up a photography book publishing award in its own right) at £29.95 and £45 respectively.
