A 36-year-old man has been remanded on bail after he was charged in connection with a €220,000 drugs seizure following a raid by detectives on a house in Cork city earlier this week.

Greg Ahern, with an address at Evergreen Road in Cork, was brought before a special sitting of Cork District Court on Saturday morning when he was charged with a total of four drug offences.

Mr Ahern was charged with one count of possession and one count of possession for sale or supply of €10,000 worth of cannabis at an address on Evergreen Road in Cork on July 14th.

Mr Ahern was also charged with one count of possession and one count of possession for sale or supply of €210,000 worth of cocaine at the same address on the same date.

The two possession charges are contrary to Section 3 of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977 while the two possession for sale or supply charges are contrary to Section 15 of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977.

Det Garda Vincent McCarthy gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution and told the court that Mr Ahern replied “I understand the charges” when they were put to him after caution.

Gardaí did not object to bail but did seek a number of bail conditions and Mr Ahern’s solicitor, Eddie Burke, said his client was willing to comply with the conditions being sought by gardaí.

Judge Mary Dorgan noted the garda position and granted Mr Ahern bail on condition that he reside at his address on Evergreen Road and sign on daily at Anglesea Street Garda station.

Judge Dorgan also made it a condition of his bail that he surrender his passport to gardaí and undertake not to apply for any new travel documents, which he also agreed to do.

And she also made it a condition of his bail that he provide gardaí with a mobile phone number that gardaí can contact him on 24/7 and that he would keep the phone fully charged and in credit.

Judge Dorgan remanded Mr Ahern on bail to appear again at Cork District Court on October 19th next while she also granted him free legal aid and assigned Mr Burke to represent him.
