Republic of Ireland international Ciaran Clark has signed a five-year deal with Aston Villa.
The 25-year-old had been the subject of interest from West Brom in the pre-season, but Villa boss Tim Sherwood was keen to tie down the versatile defender.
Sherwood said: “It’s great news, Ciaran wears his heart on his sleeve.
“He was unfortunate with injuries last season but he looks sharp now and we want to keep him fit.
“You know what you’re going to get from Ciaran – he gives everything for the cause and that’s all you can ask for as a manager.
“We’re pleased to have him here for a longer time.”
Clark admitted it has provided him with a massive boost on the eve of the new Premier League campaign.
“I’m absolutely thrilled to sign a new contract. I’ve been at Aston Villa since I was a kid and I want to continue to play for this fantastic football club.
“Everyone is looking forward to the new season and I’m delighted to be going into the opening game on Saturday knowing my long-term future has been sorted.”
Villa open their campaign with a trip to play Bournemouth, but Sherwood is set to be without Ireland under-21 star Jack Grealish and another attacking midfielder in former Spanish under-21 player Carles Gil.
Grealish picked up hamstring injury in his only pre-season outing against Tamworth last Wednesday, while Gil picked was injured in the friendly at Swindon.
Sherwood said: “Carles and Jack are still out injured – they haven’t been able to do enough training so it’s a disappointment.”
