Cardiff City are set to sign Irish striker Eoin Doyle from Chesterfield on an undisclosed seven-figure deal according to the League One club.

The 26-year-old former Sligo Rovers and Hibernian frontman is the top scorer in England, with 21 league goals and 25 in total, the last of which came in the Spireites' 2-2 draw with Doncaster Rovers.

Doyle played under his former Sligo Rovers manager Paul Cook at Chesterfield and the Dubliner's goals have helped the Derbyshire club into promotion contention.

Cardiff, who are now managed by Russell Slade, are presently 13th in the Championship table after being relegated last season.

Doyle is undergoing a medical at the Welsh club, but Chesterfield chief executive Chris Turner confirmed the deal has been done.

“We have reached an agreement with Cardiff after negotiating a deal we feel is good business for the club,” said Turner.

“Some of the money we receive will be used to reduce the club’s debt but funds are also being made available to manager Paul Cook to strengthen the squad and one or two signings are in the pipeline.”

Doyle's former Hibs forward partner Paul Heffernan has left the club to sign for Dundee.  The 33-year-old from Co Wicklow scored five goals in 35 appearances for the Edinburgh side.
