Sir, – Graeme Guthrie (June 29th) wants to know where the capital of a new united Ireland will be. Obviously it will be in the city of Utopia in Co Wonderland. – Yours, etc,
FRANK CHEATLE,
Tramore, Co Waterford.
Sir, – Adopting the Australian model, where Canberra was chosen between competing Sydney and Melbourne, one would go somewhere between Dublin and Belfast. We would have the added constraint of the Border, so somewhere right on that line would be required, just north of Castleblaney, maybe. Then we would create a new “Capital County” around the town of Crossroads.
Having moved our parliaments and public services there we could then – unionist and nationalist – join together (as the Australians do) united in opposition to our common enemy, the government of the day! – Yours, etc,
PATRICK FITZPATRICK,
Bishopstown
Cork.
