Corporate accountability legislation

Sir, – The arguments for corporate accountability legislation to be introduced in Ireland and for the development of a robust UN Treaty on Business and Human rights, put forward in the letter signed by 14 concerned stakeholders (Letters, November 1st) are compelling and should obtain widespread approval.

Unfortunately any attempts to have worldwide acceptance of human rights or corporate accountability are continuously being thwarted by any one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, who individually have a veto on any proposals that they see as a threat to their own selfish narrow agenda.

Until this undemocratic veto is removed, the rest of the world must march to their tune, no matter how discordant it happens to be. – Yours, etc,

BOBBY CARTY,
