Brexit and the Border

A chara, – Fair dues to Guy Verhofstadt, the European Parliament's chief Brexit negotiator, for describing the Border as an "illogical divide", and calling for it to remain invisible (News, September 21st). "Certainly the cows couldn't see it. Cows from the north eating grass from the south, milked in the north by a farmer from the south with their milk bottled in the south," he said. "I'm a Belgian so surrealism comes naturally to me, but to reinstate the border would be more than surreal, it would be totally absurd, even for me." Why is it that such a blindingly obvious statement, made by a visiting Belgian politician, would be regarded as politically incorrect for most Irish politicians to make? I wonder do those border cows ever chew the cud on it? – Is mise,

Sir, – It is surprising that in Dublin the European Parliament’s Brexit negotiator Guy Verhofstadt should call for Northern Ireland to be treated separately from the UK in any Brexit Settlement when the European Parliament has already voted by a large majority that there should be no special status for Northern Ireland! It is scary that the European Parliament has a negotiator who ignores its decisions. – Yours, etc,
