Accountability and the health service

Sir, – Minister for Health Simon Harris has made a number of big statements as to how he intends to fix matters.

One pronouncement that caught the ear is that management in the health service who aren’t performing “will be removed”.

A spokesperson from the health service has clarified this statement by stating that such individuals won’t be sacked, but they will be reassigned elsewhere.

This clarification is somewhat disappointing as, if someone in management isn’t capable in one role, they will probably be incapable in another.

Leaving this to one side, Mr Harris’s statement shouldn’t be forgotten. He’s talking big so let’s now measure him by this. Let’s have a periodic report from him as to how many people have “been removed”.

I’d say there’s more chance of him been removed first before anyone else is. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – With regard to the recent RTÉ programme on hospital waiting lists, where is our sense of national outrage? Tens of thousands took to the streets demonstrating against water charges. What does it take to bring us out of our homes in solidarity with the weakest and most vulnerable in our society? – Yours, etc,
