THE YOUTH wing of Fine Gael has secured a senior position on the board of the young people’s section of the European People’s Party.

International secretary of Young Fine Gael Colm Lauder is to become deputy secretary general of the Youth of the European People’s Party (Yepp).

Previous Irish board members include Minister for Transport Leo Varadkar and Minister of State for European Affairs Lucinda Creighton.

Mr Lauder takes up his position at the next Yepp congress, being held from May 12th to May 15th in Berlin. It will be hosted by German chancellor Angela Merkel and Germany’s finance minister, Wolfgang Schäuble. The congress theme will be, “How to finance the EU in the 21st century?”

The event is intended to provide a training ground for young delegates who will engage in discussion with leaders of industry, senior politicians, academics and representatives of non-governmental organisations.

Young Fine Gael is a founding member of Yepp, which comprises more than 40 centre-right political parties from across Europe. Taoiseach Enda Kenny is a vice-president of the European People’s Party.
