An Irish teenager has died in a drowning incident on the Greek island of Crete.

Local media have reported that the 15 year-old girl was found in an unresponsive state by her parents in the swimming pool of a hotel in the village of Stalida yesterday afternoon.

Emergency services were contacted but efforts to resuscitate the girl were unsuccessful. The identity of the drowning victim is not yet known.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Foreign Affairs said it is aware of the case and is providing consular assistance for the family.
