SAFETY INCIDENT:A WOMAN was in a stable condition in hospital yesterday after being attacked by a cow at the National Ploughing Championships in Athy, Co Kildare.

The woman owned the cow and was tending to it when the incident happened on Tuesday evening. She was trying to line the cow up with all of the others when she was injured.

The woman was taken to the Midland Regional Hospital, Portlaoise, on Tuesday night and was transferred to the Midland Regional Hospital, Tullamore yesterday morning.

A full incident investigation and follow up was carried out by the organisers of the championships.

They are not certain what happened but a spokeswoman for the National Ploughing Championships said that the cow was tied up and was not loose at the time.

Every safety measure was taken to protect handlers and the animals at the event and incidents such as this were a one off, she said.
