GARDAÍ INVESTIGATING the murder of a suspected drug dealer in Co Cork earlier this year are focusing on the possibility that he was shot dead by someone he knew after learning the victim was very security-conscious.
Detectives have established that Darren Falsey was so security-conscious he would not answer the front door of his rented home in Carrigaline, but would call out to whoever was there before opening the door.
Gardaí believe the fact Mr Falsey was shot a number of times near the front door of the house, at Ashbourne Court on Ferney Road in Carrigaline – at about 2pm on August 3rd last – suggests he knew his killer.
Detectives are to begin preparing a file for the Director of Public Prosecutions on the case after releasing without charge on Saturday a 29-year-old man arrested in the Douglas area on Thursday afternoon for questioning about the murder.
Gardaí had made their first arrests in the case last Monday when they arrested another 29- year-old man and a 20-year-old man at separate addresses in Carrigaline.
They also arrested a 22-year-old man in Carrigaline on Tuesday but all were later released without charge.
Gardaí believe Mr Falsey’s murder was related to his involvement in the drug trade and are focusing strongly on the theory that he was shot dead by someone who owed him money but who decided to kill him rather than pay the debt.
Meanwhile, Mr Falsey’s brother Alan yesterday paid tribute to gardaí for the manner in which they have conducted the investigation and liaised with his family following the murder of his brother three months ago.
“The gardaí have been very supportive and very protective of our family since this tragedy happened, it’s been a nightmare for us, but they have been very professional and impressive in their dealings with us and they have kept us briefed on their investigation as it progresses.
“From speaking with them, we know that they are well on top of the investigation and are making good progress and we have every confidence that they will be successful in bringing Darren’s killer to justice and securing a conviction,” he added.
A father of two, Darren Falsey (36) was a native of Waterfall on the outskirts of Cork city.
