Two men have been remanded in custody after they were charged yesterday in connection with the burglary of €123,000 from the home of a pensioner in Co Cork.

Malcolm Kelly (26), Coolageela, Kanturk, and Ger Ryan (30), Park View, Charleville, were charged at Cork District Court yesterday evening in relation to the burglary.

Both men were charged that they did between the night of October 14th and the morning of October 15th enter the man’s home in Kanturk as trespassers and commit a theft.

Det Garda Pádraig Reddington gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution in respect of Mr Kelly, and told the court that he made no reply to the charge after it was put to him after caution.

Sgt Paul Ahern gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution in relation to Mr Ryan and told the court that he too made no reply after the single charge was put to him after caution.

Insp Eddie Golden said gardaí were seeking a remand in custody for both men, and solicitor for both accused Tom O’Sullivan said that neither man was making a bail application at this time.

Judge Tim Lucey granted the men free legal aid and he remanded them in custody to appear again at Mallow District Court next Tuesday.
