Two held over serious assault in Rathmines

Two men have been arrested in connection with a serious assault on a Ukranian man in Dublin on Sunday night.

Two men have been arrested in connection with a serious assault on a Ukranian man in Dublin on Sunday night.

"Shortly before seven this morning a 27-year-old Russian national was arrested in the Rathmines area," a Garda spokeswoman said. He is being held in Terenure Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

The second man, a 23-year-old who is also Russian, is being detained in Rathmines Garda Station.

The assault took place on Leinster Road, Rathmines, between 9 p.m. and 10.45 p.m. last Sunday. The 49-year-old suffered serious head injuries after he was attacked by two men.

He was taken to James's Hospital and then transferred to Beaumont Hospital, where he underwent surgery. A spokeswoman for the hospital said his condition today "critical but stable".
