TWO MEN have been remanded on bail after they were charged in connection with attacks on two young women walking home in the early hours of the morning in different parts of Cork city last year.

Colin O’Sullivan (20), from Highfield Crescent, Kanturk, Co Cork, and Adam Heneghan (19), from Upper Dromore, Dromahane, Co Cork, were both charged with three offences when they appeared at Cork District Court.

Mr O’Sullivan and Mr Heneghan are both charged with sexual assault and robbery of a woman on the grounds of the Church of the Holy Spirit, Dennehy’s Cross, and with assault causing harm to another woman at Grenville Place, all on December 3rd last.

Det Garda James Bulger gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution in relation to Mr O’Sullivan, and told the court that Mr O’Sullivan made no reply to the charges when they were put to him.

Det Garda Ann O’Sullivan said Mr Heneghan made no reply to the sexual assault and assault charges when they were put to him after caution, and he replied “I did not take the cash” when the robbery charge was put to him after caution.

Garda Insp John Deasy said the DPP had directed that both accused face trial on all three charges. He said he was seeking a remand on bail with conditions for both accused to allow for service of the book of evidence.

He said gardaí were satisfied for both accused to be remanded on their own bond of €300 and an independent surety of €2,000.

He applied to have them remanded on bail to appear again with consent on September 12th.

He said gardaí were agreeable to bail for both accused once a number of conditions were met. These include that Mr O’Sullivan would continue to reside at his address in Kanturk, and Mr Heneghan would continue to reside at his address at Dromahane.

He also asked that both surrender their passports and agree to have no contact either directly or indirectly with each other and they would sign on every Monday and Friday at their local Garda stations in Kanturk and Mallow.

Solicitors for both accused, Emmet Boyle and Michelle O’Mahony, said that their clients were consenting to the bail conditions.

Judge Leo Malone remanded both on bail to appear at Cork District Court on September 12th.
