Visiting restrictions have been introduced at Nenagh General Hospital following the confirmation of three cases of the bug C difficile.

Admissions to the hospital’s female medical ward were suspended today, and patients affected have been isolated, a hospital spokesman confirmed.

There is a total ban on visiting the female medical ward and visitors wishing to enter other wards are requested to check with nursing staff first.

Infection-control procedures have been intensified at the hospital as a result of the outbreak.

The Clostridium difficile (C. diff) bug, spread by poor personal hygiene, mostly afflicts people with weakened immune systems and is a significant problem in hospitals and nursing homes.

Symptoms include diarrhoea and abdominal cramping and tenderness.
