A member of one of the best-known GAA families in the country is about to enter politics.

Ivan Canning, older brother of All-Star hurlers Joe and Ollie, is set to take a seat on Galway County Council.

He has been nominated to take the seat vacated by Fianna Fáil's Anne Rabbitte, who was elected as a TD for Galway East for the first time in the recent election.

Mr Canning’s co-option is likely to be a formality following his nomination by Ms Rabbitte.
