No misleading on hospitals - Kenny

Taoiseach Enda Kenny has denied he misled people with pre-election promises on the retention of local hospital services.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny has denied he misled people with pre-election promises on the retention of local hospital services.

"I am quite prepared to look the people of the country in the eye and tell them of what we found here when we took on government," he said.

He added the Government was also prepared to stand over its position of changing the health structure to produce and provide services of which people could be proud.

The Taoiseach was replying in the Dáil this afternoon to Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin who accused him of failing to keep pre-election promises, particularly relating to local health services.

In Sligo, he said, Minister of State John Perry had sought and received votes with a promise, supported by Mr Kenny, that Fine Gael in power would restore a satellite facility in Sligo hospital within the first 100 days.

Similar promises had been made about Roscommon hospital facilities, he added.

Mr Martin said Mr Kenny had told the Irish people, days before the election, that he had a list in his pocket of hospital services which he would keep open.

He challenged Mr Kenny to say what hospitals were on the list. Mr Kenny said he was getting fed up with the Fianna Fáil leader putting words in his mouth.

"Indicate to me what promises, in respect of what hospitals, I made that you can stand over," he responded. Mr Martin said he had just done that.
