A scientist based at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies will this morning receive a Max Planck Medal, an award presented to mark excellence in physics research.

Prof Werner Nahm, senior professor and director of the school of theoretical physics, will receive the medal from the German Physical Society.

He will join august company, with previous winners including Albert Einstein, Niels Bohr, Erwin Schrödinger and Paul Dirac, among others.

The medal is presented once a year to honour a leading physicist who has made a substantial impact on their field. Prof Nahm has particular expertise in cosmology, the study of how the universe formed.

As part of the award, Prof Nahm will deliver a lecture after receiving his medal in Munich today.

"We are delighted that the work of Prof Nahm has been recognised by his peers in the German Physical Society," said the institute's registrar, Cecil Keaveney.

"He joins an illustrious group who have been awarded this medal, reflecting their contribution to theoretical physics through their academic careers."
