A 28-year-old man has died following an incident at Strabane police station in Co Tyrone early this morning.

A 28-year-old man has died following an incident at Strabane police station in Co Tyrone early this morning.

Mr Ciaran Connolly, from Castlegrange, Strabane died from his injuries after being crushed by the main gate of the police station at about 1.45 a.m.

Police believe a number of men were involved in an altercation outside the police station which resulted in the death of Mr Connolly.

Sources said disclosed the horrific death followed a row at a nearby pub.

One said: "A man who was being pursued by at least two others was seeking refuge in the station when one of them was caught in the gates."

It is understood special sensors on the gates designed to stop them shutting if objects are in the way were examined for possible faults.

Acting Assistant Chief Superintendent for the North Region Mr Steward Tosh said it was a "tragic death" and expressed his sympathy to the family.

He said a thorough investigation would be carried out by police "with the independent oversight of the Ombudsman and the Northern Ireland Health and Safety Executive."

Police have appealed for witnesses.
