Investigation under way to determine cause of a fire in Galway town of Gort

Two people have died in an overnight fire in Gort, Co Galway.

An investigation is under way to determine the cause of the fire, which happened at Tom O Donnells Flats on Railway Road.

Emergency services were alerted to the fire at 2.50am and four units of the fire brigade attended the scene.

Two people were pronounced dead at the scene after being removed from the building. One of the dead has been confirmed as a 38-year-old man but the second body has not yet been identified.

Their remains were removed to University Hospital Galway and a post mortem is due to take place later today. There were no other injuries.

The scene is being preserved for a technical examination.
