Staff at the Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers' Association (ICMSA) are to go on strike from Tuesday in a row over what Siptu claims are "intolerable" working conditions.

The union, which represents 14 clerical staff at the farm body's headquarters in Limerick, plans to picket at the premises on Tuesday morning.

A branch secretary of the union, Ger Kennedy, said the dispute was about the "unacceptable treatment of employees" by management.

There was also a "generally poor working environment which has led to intolerable working conditions, with serious implications for health and safety".

He also accused the association of failing to address allegations of bullying and harassment, and of attempting to dismiss a member of staff contrary to a "procedural agreement".

The ICMSA said it rejected utterly the "outrageous allegations" made by the union.

It said the reasons outlined by Siptu for the strike in a press statement yesterday did not correspond with the reasons given by the union to the ICMSA.

It claimed what was actually at issue was the question of who directed the association, "the farmer members, or a handful of staff and members of Siptu?"

"It is the farmer members, through the ICMSA national council, who authorised the serving of redundancy to an individual. That notice of redundancy was issued in strict observation of established industrial procedure."
