The Northern-Eastern Health Board (NEHB) is to launch an investigation into the death of a nine-year-old girl who died three weeks after she was discharged from hospital following an appendix operation.
Frances Sheridan died at her home in Cootehill, Co Cavan on Sunday morning just two days after attending hospital for the second time with stomach pains.
Doctors were unable to identify the problem and she was sent home. Over the weekend her condition worsened and she died on Sunday morning shortly before an ambulance arrived.
The girl's body was removed to Dublin where a post mortem is due to be carried out by State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy.
The NEHB today announced it is to establish a group to "review the circumstances surrounding her death". The Board also offered its condolences to the Sheridan family.
