A NIGERIAN economist, a theatre group director and a language school director are among the Green Party’s five candidates seeking seats in next year’s local elections in Galway city and county.
Councillor and former mayor Niall Ó Brolcháin, who has also been a general election candidate, is standing in the west area of Galway city, and James Hope, former president of NUI Galway’s students’ union, is standing in Galway city’s east ward.
Maireád Ní Chróinín, who ran for the party in the Galway East constituency in the 2007 general election, is standing in the city’s central ward.
A Polish and Irish language speaker, she has worked on socio-economic projects and is director of a new theatre group.
Paul Osikoya, an accountant from Lagos currently undertaking an economics doctorate in NUIG, is standing for the Green Party in the Tuam Town Council elections.
He has been involved in community initiatives, including management of the Galway One World Centre.
Patrick Creed, director of Galway Language Centre and lecturer in renewable energies at NUIG and Athlone Institute of Technology, is standing in the Loughrea electoral area.
He is chairman and co-founder of the Athenry environmental network.
The candidates declared their election programmes at a press conference in Galway city yesterday.
