American punk legends Green Day are to play two concerts in Ireland in October.

American punk legends Green Day are to play two concerts in Ireland in October.

The band will play the Odyssey Arena in Belfast on October 20th and the O2 in Dublin on October 21st.

Next month Green Day will release their much anticipated follow-up to their 2004 album American Idiotwhich has sold 14 million copies and has been one of the most critically and commercially records of the century to date.

21st Century Breakdownfollows much the same format as American Idiot. The album is divided into three acts – 'Heroes and Cons', 'Charlatans and Saints' and 'Horseshoes and Handgrenades' – and follows a young couple, Christian and Gloria, through the mess and promise of the century so far. It will be released on May 15th.

Critics have said 21st Century Breakdowncompares favourably to its illustrious predecessor with one music critic describing it as a "masterpiece".

Tickets go on sale this Friday at 9am.
