The man was being held under Section Four of the Criminal Justice Act.

He can be detained for up to 24 hours.

Last night the house, which is opposite a car dealership, and the road were sealed off pending examination by the Garda Technical Bureau.

The State Pathologist's office had also been asked to carry out an investigation at the scene.

The two-storey house is located off the main Roscommon to Longford road and is not far from the centre of the town.

It is understood that the woman was Brazilian and that she had known the man who was arrested.

However, gardaí would not disclose her identity last night.
