Galway gardaí have issued an appeal for witnesses to a serious sexual assault on an 18-year-old woman which occurred only yards from the city's main Garda station over the weekend.

The young woman was walking home alone after a night out when she was accosted by a young man close to the Bridge Mills building on Bridge Street in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The man, who was 19 or 20, sexually assaulted his victim at about 4am before running away from the scene. The young woman reported the incident shortly after it took place.

Gardaí are treating the assault as serious and have appealed to the public, especially taxi and hackney drivers, for information.
