A new €200 million commercial, leisure and residential development in Drogheda is set to create over 1,000 jobs in the Co Louth town.

Of those jobs, 500 will be permanent and 600 will be created during construction.

Building on the 43,000 sq m Southbank development will begin in the new year and is expected to be completed by 2009.

Developers Edward Holdings said the project will include office and retail space, an eight-screen Multiplex cinema, restaurants, a farmers' market and a hotel extension.

Subject to planning approval, the residential element of the development will have 180 apartments and car parking for 650 vehicles.

The company plans to construct a new road through the site reaching to its eastern boundary enabling traffic to access Marsh Road without using the Dublin road.
