Met Éireann today issued a warning to drivers following heavy local falls of snow in parts of the midlands, north and east.

The snow should die out later in the day but may linger on the ground overnight leading to hazardous driving conditions. Milder conditions are expected tomorrow.

Drivers should take particular care in northern counties, including Cavan, Monaghan and Donegal.

Gardaí in Donegal are advising motorists to drive only if necessary. In Sligo and Donegal county council snowploughs have been at work clearing and gritting roads. Most are now passable, but drivers are asked to take care when driving on secondary roads.

There is also snow in the Wicklow mountains around the Sally Gap and motorists are advised to take an alternative route.

The rain experienced in the rest of the country today will spread eastwards and clear by tomorrow evening. On New Year's Eve, it will be cold and windy with a possibility of hail and frost in some areas.

A gale warning has been issued for tonight on all Irish coastal waters.
